Dr. Elliot Jurist is a practicing clinical psychologist and an academic.

He is Professor of Psychology and Philosophy at the Graduate Center and The City College of New York, CUNY.  From 2004-2013, he served as the Director of the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at CUNY.

From 2008 to 2017, Dr. Jurist has been the Editor of Psychoanalytic Psychology, the journal of Division 39 of the APA.

He is also the Editor of a book series, Psychoanalysis and Psychological Science, from Guilford Publications.  His book, Minding Emotions: Cultivating Mentalization in Psychotherapy, in this series, appeared in 2018. His co-authored book with Norka Malberg, Jordan Bate and Mark Dangerfiled, Working with Parents: A Mentalization-Based Approach appeared in 2023.

Dr. Jurist is the author of Beyond Hegel and Nietzsche: Philosophy, Culture and Agency (MIT Press, 2000) and co-author of Affect Regulation, Mentalization and the Development of the Self (Other Press, 2002), the latter of which has been translated into five languages and won two book prizes.  He is also the co-editor of Mind to Mind: Infant Research, Neuroscience, and Psychoanalysis (Other Press, 2008). 

Dr. Jurist's research has focused on the role of emotions in psychotherapy.  His research team has created a new measure of emotion regulation.  He maintains interests in all areas of the study of emotions as well as in addictions and ethics.
